Important Alert for New Parents

This is something I wish I had been warned about about a decade back.. ;) so thought it might be useful for some of the new parents out there.

Scene:
S is practicing a song on the piano.. the tune is very familiar to me and I found that I was humming the end of the line before he finished playing it.. couldn't quite place it so went up to him and asked what song it was.. it was called "The more we get together.. ". Sang it with the words added in a couple of times and still couldn't figure out where I'd heard it before..

After about half a day of it being stuck in my head, I thought checking online might help as it may have been it had been used in an ad/jingle somewhere and that's why it was familiar. No such luck. Then I saw this video:

And it struck me! It was from a Barney DVD that I used to play a LOT for D when she was 1.5 or 2.. which is 10 years ago..  She was a tough kid to feed and this dvd was one of my saviours at the time.. and apparently the tune has been in my memory ever since!

So new parents - Beware! Those kiddie songs and cartoons and tunes.. are going to take up space in your head for a long time to come.. and believe me, when you're 40 and trying to remember important stuff and wondering why your brain doesn't seem to have space, this will feel like an important discovery. So maybe you could sing along a bit less with the videos now and save that precious brain bandwidth for later ;).

Day 13: Laughter is the best medicine

Today is themed post day again :)..

Laughter.. hmm somehow today the first thing that came to mind on seeing this quote was Suppandi.. such a favourite in our childhood days.. it was so much easier to appreciate humour then, without thinking about all the extrapolated aspects! This is mainly to do with all the name calling that seems to abound in this cartoon - words like idiot, fool and stupid are used in nearly every strip !! Well, I remind myself that I read it when I was young and it didn't really prompt me to start calling people names :P.. but still I can't help but mention it to D once in a while. I would never discourage her from reading it however (much like the fairy tale exposure that many parents seem to over-think nowadays), as I believe we need to keep our eyes and ears open to all inputs, and learn to take in what enriches us while disregarding the rest. Uff, too much funda for Suppandi I know ;).. so go read this now:

Butt-ed out?

One of those hilarious instances that happen all the time that I don't always manage to note down...

D is 7 and a half years old, and a voracious reader to boot. Once in a while I read something "with" her just to see she's understanding all the words, you guessed it - she surprizes me with knowing a lot of the  elaborate words too.

This happened last evening - S has some allergy in his eyes, so in trying to keep him from doing anything to strain it, we had a long story session. I read 2 stories, D read 1, then D wanted to tell her "own" made-up story. I started walking around and doing something else by now, but suddenly heard her use the word "butted" in the story - about a cow butting somebody.

S: What's the meaning of butted?
D: It's when you push somebody with your bum.

5 seconds of "Hunh?!" from me, and then it struck!!! My perfect little monster did have a few doubts after all :)

P.S: For Day 6 of Marathon Bloggers, I think this challenge has made me note down more embarassing stuff than I ever used to, my kids are not going to thank you ;).

P.P.S: I hope the kids are going to say/do something funny tomorrow!
